The challenge
Centralisation of in-patient services into a brand new hospital created on an existing site in Farnborough. The new facility for the Bromley Hospitals NHS Trust needed to provide over 500 acute care beds, and associated diagnostic and support facilities, a new accident and emergency department with its own ambulance and walk-in entrances and 88 mental health beds in a discrete unit. The large out-patient unit had to function in conjunction with satellite sites at Beckenham and Orpington

The approach
Estate rationalisation and provision of the new facilities was achieved through a PFI scheme. Our specialist knowledge and experience of this procurement process led to our engagement as lead Technical Advisor from the earliest stage at project conception. Supporting the Trust through the bidding, evaluation and negotiation process, we advised the Trust throughout to a successful contract close. In addition we acted as the Trust' Development Monitor during the design and construction phases.

The result
The scheme reached financial close in 1999 and was completed on time and to budget in 2002. ARCADIS AYH now continue to advise and support the Trust in the post occupancy period, including development of new capital works projects and provision of estates management services.
