After completing my degree in commercial management and quantity surveying at Loughborough University, I joined ARCADIS AYH as an assistant project surveyor and was assigned to the "Arsenal On The Move" project team, which, over the course of the project, involved over 30 ARCADIS AYH employees.
The construction of the Emirates Stadium has been a highly successful project attracting a great deal of publicity. Whilst it involved the construction of the 60,000 seat stadium for Arsenal Football Club, the project as a whole is more unique and complex than it may first appear. A key aspect of the project involved relocating an 800-tonnes/day waste transfer station and over 50 private interests. It also involved the construction of two bridges over railway lines and the development of 2,500 residential units on 6 sites around the stadium. Initially, I assisted the project surveyor's cost planning and later I was given the responsibility of running my own project - the relocation of one of the many local businesses from the proposed stadium site involving the fit-out of a local industrial unit to meet the requirements of that particular business.
Since sitting my APC and obtaining membership to the RICS, my role and responsibilities on the project grew substantially. I was appointed project surveyor and worked on one of the residential developments and several of the stadium's fit-out packages. The two most significant projects being the catering areas and Arsenal FC Megastore.
ARCADIS AYH strongly encourages young surveyors to obtain chartered status and I am actively involved in developing and delivering monthly APC workshops to help prepare young surveyors to sit their APC final assessment.
ARCADIS AYH is the only company I have worked for since graduating – the hands-on approach and project involvement has provided me with early responsibility and the effective support network has given me the appropriate tools to progress my career and fulfil my potential as a quantity surveyor. There is an active social scene and all employees are encouraged to participate in these events to develop strong working relationships both internally and externally.
